Occupational Therapy & Continence
Promoting the Role of the Occupational Therapist in Continence Care
Education and Integration was a national project funded by the Department of Health under the Section 64 grant scheme. This 3 year project sets out to identify the training needs of Occupational Therapists and to meet these needs by developing appropriate training at under and post graduate levels. This project has since matured to include:
An optional module for third level undergraduate OT's which focuses on the OT role in continence care. This is now fully incorporated into the syllabus at Salford University.
Incorporation of basic modules focusing on the introduction of the theme of OT within continence care. These are now completed at the Universities of Salford, Liverpool and Lancaster.
Continuing development of the multi professional Special Interest Group which focuses on the functional and psychosocial aspects of continence problems. Membership has continued to grow and currently stands at 102 members (mixture of OT's, OT support staff and continence nurses). Meetings are held twice a year. The group is currently working on developing an assessment tool to be used with people who have functional incontinence and the use of 'trigger questions' within a general continence assessment.
The study day 'A practical approach to toileting' continues to be offered either at Disabled Living or as a tailor made course purchased by health trusts and services.
Supporting OT services around the UK in the establishment and development of continence specialist OT posts. This involves the provision of training courses and facilitating networking with established continence services.
Plans for clinical based research to be carried out and disseminated regarding the use of urinals with children with special needs.
Working closely with industry with regard to the design, supply and marketing of alternative male and female urinals.
