Promoting Continence in Schools
PromoCon works to address continence difficulties in schools in the following way.
Good Practice Guidlines
The publication "Managing Bowel and Bladder Problems in Schools and Early Year" is available for download here.
The Good Practice guidelines have been written to help local authorities, schools, early year’s settings and health providers develop policies and procedures specific to local circumstances and children’s individual needs in relation to bladder and bowel problems and other toileting issues.
Working in Schools
Researching Teachers Attitudes towards Children with Wetting and Soiling Problems
PromoCon is currently undertaking a major research project regarding teacher’s attitudes and issues in school relating to children with wetting and soiling problems. Results of this research will help direct educational packages for schools and resources for school nurses.
Developing Resources
- PromoCon worked in partnership with Lancashire Education Authority to develop guidelines for Head teachers and staff: ‘Toileting/Continence- guidance notes for schools’ can be downloaded from this site.
- Key stage 3 curriculum resources for teachers to bring continence issues into the classroom: "The PromoCon Teaching Pack" - Healthy bladder and healthy bowel, Incontinence and school toilets.
We are supporting:
- The ‘Water is Cool in School’ Campaign, set up by ERIC – Education & Resources for Improving Childhood Incontinence.
- ‘The Bog Standard’ Campaign, by sharing innovative practice with regard to school toilets set up by ERIC – Education & Resources for Improving Childhood Incontinence.
We are working in partnership to:
- Encourage healthy bladder and bowels in school age children by working with health promotion departments.
- Raise expectations of success or improvement in achieving continence
