Recent examples of this include:
Moving and Handling Children.
This training has been commissioned by a childrens’ day nursery and Special Schools which felt that their workers would benefit from focusing on the theory and practical aspects of moving and handling children. Whilst planning the training, we spoke to the managers in order to identify some specific issues. These included the need to lift two children with special physical needs and the need to work in a building not originally built for this use. The practical session are tailored to make them as relevant as possible, using cots and changing facilities. The theory session focused on applying back care principles and legislative requirements for children handling. All scenarios used were based on the age group too. The practical session utilised a child-sized dummy and equipment such as cots, prams and changing areas. The training was very well evaluated.
Moving and Handling People – Risk Assessment (3 days)
Is it part of your job to carry out manual handling risk assessments?
Are you competent to carry out manual handling risk assessments?
There is a legal requirement that those completing moving and handling risk assessments are competent to do so. This three day course will look at the theory and practice of manual handling risk assessment, with the aim of enabling delegates to carry out ergonomic manual handling risk assessments of people handling activities in their workplace. Successful completion of the three day course and associated class and work based written activities will result in delegates being awarded two units accredited by the Open College Network at Level 3. The accredited units are: Manual Handling Risk Assessment and Manual Handling Practical Skills.

This course has been created in response to the current Government agenda suggesting that elderly and disabled people are currently waiting too long for equipment which would allow them to live at home for longer. The course will enable various social care, health, and housing workers to extend their skills when conducting complex assessments. The content of the four days include:-
• An insight in to some common medical conditions and how they affect the individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks.
• Continuing medical conditions and an in-depth look at stair-lifts and the risks and regulations
surrounding their use.
• Elements of relevant Disability Awareness, basic mathematical techniques required forissuing ramps (gradients) and planning wet rooms (floor plans, turning space).
