Digital Rectal Examination
Digital Rectal examination is seen as a nurse role and it is important to have the correct training to conduct these examinations in a professional dignified manner.
This course will look at Principles of DRE Principles of constipation management/manual evacuation prescribing rectal medications Legal and Ethical considerations and Manual evacuation
By the end of the session you should have a good understanding of the following aspects –
- Anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Legal aspects of DRE and DRF.
- Aids and appliances used in the management of faecal incontinence and constipation.
- Use of laxatives in constipation.
- Autonomic dysreflexia
- Digital stimulation
The ½ day training includes an assessed practical session using manikins to assess delegate’s competency doing this examination.

Cost: £400 half day, £750 full day
Plus travel fees and subsistence where applicable.
This course can be delivered nationwide.
